Thursday Island Historic / Scenic Bus Tours : The islands’ hidden past is revealed on Peddell’s comprehensive coach tour. Step back to 1893 when you visit Green Hill Fort. Built in response to a Russian War scare, its’ now silent 6" breach loading guns still jut out menacingly over the islands’ main approaches. Once munitions storage space, the Forts’ underground tunnels and rooms today house the Torres Strait Museum. Museum displays include Pearling, Shipping and Military themes.

This is also the best spot on the island to get those panoramic postcard style shots so be sure to bring a camera! Much can be learned of Thursday Island’s history by a visit to the local cemetery; here Buddhists, Shintoists, Hindus and Moslems share their last resting place with Islanders and Europeans. A striking Japanese Pearl Divers Memorial sits amongst the many ornate tombstones overlooking Hammond Island to the north.

Two Island Tour : While we recommend an overnight stay, if time is of the essence and you can only spare one day...Start your day with a Peddells Ferry ride to T.I. from Seisia Jetty. Upon arrival a local guide will escort you on a tour of discovery around historic T.I. (see TI Tour description above). Just across the harbour is Horn Island, here you’ll enjoy a mouth- watering buffet style luncheon at a small resort. You'll have time to visit a WWII Museum and will also take in a tour to visit the many WWII relics strewn across Horn Island. Your tour concludes with a return boat ride to T.I. where you connect with the ferry back to your campsite on the mainland. This is a very comprehensive tour and we recommend an overnight stay especially if you’d like some free time on Thursday Is.!
